It took most of a day because the backup drive was a repurposed netbook drive running very slowly in a USB external case. That aside, the intuitive VAIO rescue led me thru the Windows 7 restoration with no glitches. I am computer literate but not a tech savvy person, so I was pleased that Vaio was so helpful. The laptop belongs to a fraternal organization and when its previous "administrator" left and forgot the password, the VAIO VPCEL22FX was useless. Now we have it back in serve. So thanks!

Vaio Bios one time password
I have locked my PC bios and I was wondering if anyone could help me get a onetime Password -
I called a 1-800 number which directed me to local Vaio service center,
local Vaio service said thay cannot do it.
So now that Sony makes no Vaio, where do I get such password?

External Hard Drive for backup
I purchased a WD external hard drive for my backup, and it won't run on my computer which is Model #
SVE17122CXB. The hard drive is 3.0 & 2.0 compatible but my computer won't accept it. Through Vaio Care they only lists optical discs or a flash drive for backup media.
I was told the external drive would be fine to use by a Sony support agent, and that is why I purchased it. Well, sorry to say, it doesn't work, and I've spent a chunk of money on the drive because of incorrect advice from the Sony agent. Thany you so much for the wrong information. Now, I'll need to spend more money on optical discs. From reading here, there seems to be some confusion regarding the right flash drives to use. Some people had problems with their flash drives not working either. So, I guess, hopefully, the safest bet is to purchase some optical discs. Even with those people have run into problems. Seems some brands of discs don't work with the Sony computers, and you need to only use the Sony brand optical discs. It's just giving me a major headache, and I just would like someone who has reliable knowledge to offer the correct information as to what is best to use for my backup media.
Thank you to anyone who has the correct information to offer me in regards to this. Oh, I'm running Windows 8.1 after upgrading from Win 8. I don't plan on upgrading to Win 10 any time soon either.

Operating System Corrupted after Recovery Disk Install
Help!!!
Recently my hard drive from my Vaio VPCF12BFX crashed. I unfortunately did not have a usuable system image but I have tried to reinstall the operating system from my recovery disks. After install (I've done this half a dozen times) I get the error: "windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware." After restart I get the error: "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation." If I do restart the same message comes up.
Luckily, I found this thred: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-could-not-complete-the-installation-to/bf09c3c5-298b-459f-aed5-4f431b8398f5 and was able to use the oobe to continue the installation and at least get a basic desktop. However, at this stage my computer is in audit mode, it cannot install new updates and none of the vaio care/update programs are installed.
I have tried to install the programs manually (Net 4 framework, vaio care, vaio update, etc.) but I do not have the appropriate framework to do so.
From there I contacted microsoft and these were the steps that we preformed and their response:
1. Open Command Prompt Administrator.
2. Enter sfc /scannow
- Open Regedit.
- Typed sysprep/oobe and slmgr /dlv command
It seems that your OS is corrupted, so contact Sony first regarding your case so they can figure out what to do - since Windows 7 is pre-installed and an OEM version.
i just want to get a totally functioning operating system so that I can upgrade to windows 10.

How do I update the recovery partition from VISTA(pre-installed) to Windows 7 (SONY free upgrade)
When I purchased my VAIO laptop PCG-7171L, VISTA was pre-installed to the recovery partition (access via F10 key during bootup), and I upgraded to Windows 7 (SONY free upgrade) a few months later. How can I update the old recovery partition which has VISTA factory installed to be replaced with my current OS which is windows 7 ?

Which Vaio Drivers download? Does order matter?

I have Vaio VPCCB2m0e with win 7. Just installed win 7 and trying to download original vaio drivers from sony website https://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/content/cnt-dwnl/VPCCB2M0E/list#os1 . Unfortunately there are so many files in there that I'm lost. In some cases we have 2 drivers to choose and I don't know which one should I go for. We have drivers, utilities, software, firmare, bios groups in there.
Could someone please give me an order I should download necessary drivers (inluding drivers names from the link) because it is confusing when we have ie 2 graphic drivers for radeon AMD.
I would really appretiate it.

PCG-2F1L (VGC-JS110J) memory upgrade
Can the memory of my old VAIO desktop PCG2F1L (also known as VGC-JS110J ) to be upgraded to at least 8GB? Can the hard drive to be upgraded to SSD? Can the processor to be upgraded to i7?
This desktop is too old and cannot perform well anymore. It makes very loud noise every time I turn it on as well.
I live in the U.S. Can I bring my desktop to Sony store to have them upgrade for me? How much it costs for installation?

update sony software after system restore w win 7 pro
i've just had to do a system restore to Jan 2012...it's the point at which I had recently gotten my Sony Vaio VPCEH27FX all of my software was installed and everything was current, but no data. I've now done all of the WIndows updates...days of them...and i need to update my sony software also. I found "VAIO Update" in the program list, but it won't open properly. So how do I gets everything up to "today"?

Wconnect Tool Software
Hello Guys,
I am looking to find the software wconnect tool that is used to syncronize the keyboard and mouse to the computer.
I had to replace my old keyboard because it was broken and i bought a new one outside my country and for some reason that i dont understand sony does not provide the wconnect tool separately, i mean you cant download it from anywhere or anyplace. They say that you need to reinstall all the computer WTH????
I tried a lot of thing in order to connect my keyboard but without success.
I beg you to help me on this, can you please upload the piece of software to one drive location? or something? the software is located to c:\wconnecttool.
BTW my sony is AIO VPCL243FL, i love it, i just upgraded to I7, 16GB, 1TB SSD, dongle WIFI AC, win10, etc

Fix Assist Button?
A long time ago, when I bought my laptop (Everything working fine), I tried to dualboot it with Linux, and I found out that while the Power Button still booted Windows directly, the Assist Button would boot Grub (or whatever I was using, can't really remember), and the option to access the rescue partition was there, so well, I still had a way to access the BIOS and the other settings. Some unknown amount time later constantly using Windows, when I decided to use my linux partition through the Assist button, well, nothing happened, just black screen.
I then found out that whatever happened, happened on the EFI partition. Windows still boots alright, but without it, I can't even refresh it, it just boots back to windows or a black screen, probably because the efi expected to boot doesn't exist anymore.
I would like to fix it, no idea how, I would expect that having factory EFI files, I could just replace them via Windows and everything go back to normal, all partitions are still there, just can't acess them. Tried to use my recovery USB that I made when I bought it, and couldn't boot from it, it just boots windows and nothing else.
Another way to see it would be to think I had to change my HD and now there is no Sony default partitions available.
So, any solution?

what type of SD drive do I need for my VPCSA2CFX laptop

My computer has been randomly freezing off late. I have Windos 7 and I have defragmented my disk as well but the problem persists. Someone suggested I copy my stuff to the SD drive. I have a SD slot but I do not kno what kind of SD drive I should purchase as there seem to be a ton of options in the types of SD drive - micro, regular etc.
Can you please tell me which one I should buy?
And, if there is any suggestion on how I can stop my computer from freezing, I'd appreciate it.

I'm Using Sony Vaio VPCEA16FG model laptop my laptop is not able to read any cd/dvd I have installed all the drivers from the support page.
