HI!
I recently needed to buy a new laptop in a hurry after water damage in my Dell Inspirion (it was 7 years old anyways...)
I had to purchase one in a pawn shop, but it was in a really great condition. However, since I bought it, I noticed a HUGE difference when it comes to rendering movies in Movie Studio Platinum 13 (what was taking around 3 hours now takes 10 hours!!!!) Also, I cannot even preview the videos I make. I also saw in the task manager that CPU is always almost at max (while rendering movies).
I thought the problem was RAM, cause before, I had 6 GB and now, with my Vaio, I only have 4 GB. But with the tast manager thing, I bet the problem is with the processor.... So, is there any way to change the processor on this laptop? I searched a lot over the net and have found contradictory information!
My current processor is running at 1.87 GHZ... it's Intel Pentium P6000.
So, can I change it? And if so, where can I buy it?
Also, do you think that removing current 2 X 2 GB memory and replacing it with 2 X 4GB could solve the problem? (I doubt it as I can clearly see in the task manager that the memory is never really above 50%). But I don't know much about computers/laptops! :-p
Thanks for your help! :-)
Please advise which Intel Processors (CPUs) are compatible with the VAIO VPCZ1290X.
After Sony stated it no longer repaired VAIO laptops, and recommented Geek Squad, I sent to local Geek to replace LC, who referred to local repair that messed it up and found it running a lot hotter. I have since replaced the LCD, missing and damaged parts (hinge, lens and magnet sensor and screws), and now want to find a way to lower temp so fan isn't on high entire time computer is on - ruins battery life too..
I suspect higher temps are caused by damage to thermal seal with heat sink, and this cpu (i7-620M) always seemed to run hotter than my VPCZ13KGX (using i7-640M).
It appears I can replace the i7-620M with a new i7-640M, but, as long as i am upgrading, looking to get WiFi HD (to broadcast presentations wirelessly to HDTVs).
So, please advise which upgraged (higher generation) Intel processors can work on the motherboard.
Intel said I should come to you because their tools can't detect type of motherboard, chipsets, and cpu sockets, etc.
Thank you.

I have been having continued problems with my Vaio Care software. I have been purchasing the updates every year from Iolo for the Advanced Tools. If I don't purchase the update, most components of the Vaio Care don't work properly. I've spent countless hours over the years nurturing the Vaio Care software, uninstalling it and re-installing it in order of updates in an effort to debug it, all while Sony has been dealing with financial and product support problems. It's taken me years to discover this tool to hopefully get some relief. Now, I cannot upgrade my Vaio PC (SVL24116FXB) to Windows 10 due to some inexplicable error code that has no definitive path to a solution, I've spent dozens of hours with Microsoft tech people remotely accessing my PC with no happy end result, and now I keep being told by Vaio Care that my Vaio Care software needs to be updated, yet I have VC version 8.4.4.09181 for some reason and the update that Vaio Care is trying to tell me I need is 8.1... an older version. I cannot delete that message as it's considered a "Critical Update" so it just NEVER GOES AWAY. Also, even though one of the first things I did years back when I bought this computer was generate backup CDs, Vaio Care STILL keeps telling me I need to "Backup Files" and "Create Recovery Media". This is so frustrating.
I want to buy an external backup hard-drive for my laptop in case something happens to my laptop. Do the external hard-drive have to be compatible with the model I have PCG-61A14L?
I have a VPC-F1290S with 8GB of memory.
I downloaded the manual, and it doesn't say anywhere what the maximum memory is, nor what type and speed of memory it takes. It shows you how to replace it though ... LOL.
I searched all over the support site and I cannot find this information anywhere. You'd think it would be in the specs for the computer.

Hi Folks,
I attempted to upgrade my Sony Vaio Laptop (8.1 Pro with Media Center) to windows 10.
My screen flashed to Black. I restarted the computer and I was informed that windows was not activated and
to enter a key Number??? The only key number that came with my system is barely readable, but if this will help to
restore windows, I sincerely would appreciate anything you can do for me please!!' Key # ended in **** J8D3P.
My Sony Vaio Product I.D # is; 00261-70000-00000-AA859. 64 bit operating system.
I am a disabled USMC Combat Veteran, and I cannot get around by myself very easily, hard to do with no legs, and 1/2 of my face missing. Not one to ask folks for their expertise (or help) but I could really use the assistence now.

Thank You Very Much!!!
I have had to get this laptop repaired numerous times since I have purchased it. Overheating + Software issues. Lost data and have to keep backing up just to ensure I don't continously lose my data.
Help. I gave up with Windows 10, and am having troubles reinstalling Windows 7.
I am tapping F10 to go to VAIO Care, then start recovery.
Everything starts fine, then I get the following pop up:
Deployment Inage Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Image Version: 6.1.7600.16385
The scratch directory size might be insufficient to perform this operation.
It can cause unexpected behavoir.
Use the /ScratchDir optio to point to a folder with sufficient scratch space
The recommended size is at least 1024 MB
It then goes those a process, this pop up disappears, and then system goes through install like normal until VIAO Care is installing Smart wifi at ******%
It just holds there and won't complet the Windows install.
I've tried this 6 times identical.
What can I do to get my vpcz13KGX back to norma Windows 7-64 Pro install.

I want to begin by stating how much I recommend the old Sony VAIO VPCZ12 and VPCZ13 series, and the Sony VAIO Recovery Discs.
There still is no laptop that is as light, has the battery life, display quality, CPU, RAM, and overall performance.
I will add to others, you can remove the Intel N6200 WiFi (AGN), with Intel AC 7260 to get 867 mps on N, and AC, and wish Sony would make new Motherboard that could upgrade the first gen i7 CPU to another generation that would allow Intell HD Wi to project documents for presentations.
Now, with all that said. The VAIO works with W10, but uses the Intel HD video and you loose NVIDIA (some loss of clarity). But, for me, big issue is that you lose the W7 Backup and Restore, and the new Edge wont allow java plugin so you can't file documents with courts and most govt agencies.
W10 uses File History to back up files, but you can't use one computer's backup to extract files to another computer without assignng the second computer to the backup, at which time you change the backup configuration, and it stores files from the second computer - No good for my file retenion needs.
So, back to W7, and here begins the real problem. W10 creates a DISM file that creates its own "Scratch Directory" used as a temporary directory to build and install W10. That Scratch Directory is smaller than what is needed to reinstall W7 with the Sony Drivers using Sony Recovery partition. And, for some reason, even after formatting the harddrive and removing all partitions before using Sony Recovery Discs to reinstall the OEM partition with W7 and Sony Recovery/Care and Drivers, when the computer reboots after intalling the OEM partition, you get a pop-up stating the DISM "Scratch Directory" size may be insufficent to perfom the install. It's right, at ****** percent completion, the install stops, and when rebooted, Windows won't load fully because install is not complete.
I have used Sony Recoverry to check all hardware, and used scan to check the SDD - all are perfect.
I have been with Sony Premium and Microsoft, both say it's the other's problem. MS states the DISM is resident with each windows and would be erased by the nest instal, And Sony Premium stating Recoverry Discs that have worked befroe should work again. So, on hold with both to try new recovery discs, where Encompass needs to wait until Sony advises what part no for the VPCZ13KGX Recovery Discs. Until then, ....
